I had the pleasure of first meeting Debbie when I didn’t even have a photography studio. She was gracious enough to come to my home and style my clients’ hair and makeup in my living room. I knew immediately when I met her I had found a gem! Her natural talent and ability to work under pressure was amazing. The best part is Debbie always goes out of her way to make sure whoever she is styling feels comfortable and loves the look she is creating. You can’t help but feel calm and happy when you are around Debbie. She is an incredible stylist and an even more amazing human being. I absolutely love working with her!
I want to share her answers to a few questions I recently asked her about her career as a professional hair stylist and makeup artist to help you get to know Debbie a little bit better. Enjoy!
Your story – how did you get your start as a hair and make-up artist?
I started working behind the counter selling cosmetics 24 years ago. I worked for a number of lines over the next 16 years, including Lance, Prescriptives, and Giorgio Armani. After I had my son, the opportunity to start my own business came about and it was the perfect time to apply my skills and everything I had learned over the years and reap the benefits for me and my growing family. I now do a variety of different things including print, video, corporate shoots, weddings, and private clients.
What is your favorite part about hair and makeup artistry?
My favorite part of my career is a combination of the creativity and the relationships that are built. I love using my craft to achieve a visual goal, whatever it may be. It’s amazing how makeup can not only enhance someones beauty, but their mood and the way they project themselves! Interacting with the client or photographer while this is all happening is also such an amazing thing and it actually helps create the finished product.
When you work with a client, how do you help them craft their vision for how they would like their hair and makeup to look?
When I meet with a client for the first time, I spend some time getting to know them, what they like to see, what they are comfortable in before I make any suggestions. That way I can suggest a look that will compliment their personality along with their looks.
Do you have any advice for brides who are still trying to decide how to style their hair and makeup for their wedding?
My advice for brides that are still trying to decide on that perfect look for their special day is to stay true to their natural beauty and enhance the features that they feel are their best. Showing the best version of yourself is always the best way to go.
What is your favorite hair style or makeup trend at the moment? What do you think will be the upcoming bridal hair and makeup style trends?
My favorite makeup trend is big lashes, hands down! What better way to show off your eyes and make them look twice as big than with lots of lash. False lashes are like a facelift for the eyes, opening them up and making you look more youthful. Same with hair, little volume is a must! As far as predicting the hair and makeup trends goes, it always comes back around, so it’s probably something we’ve seen before with a little twist.
